Overview

Nestled within the Heritage Wing lobby of the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in George Town, Penang, Java Tree offers a refined dining experience that artfully blends classic European cuisine with subtle regional nuances. This restaurant, accessible through the elegant Palm Court, invites guests into an ambiance reminiscent of Penang’s colonial past—quiet, polished, and steeped in charm.

The core menu is a celebration of French culinary tradition, featuring standout dishes like Beef Wellington, Foie Gras terrine, and Beef Tournedos, each executed with precision and a respect for ingredient integrity. Notably, the Escargot on Mushroom redefines a classic; by baking escargot atop mushrooms rather than the customary shell, it unites earthiness and richness in a harmonious bite that leaves a lasting impression. For those seeking hearty, comforting fare, their Sunday roast presents generous cuts of tender beef or lamb paired with Yorkshire puddings and seasonal vegetables, delivering warmth and authenticity in every serving.

Java Tree’s selection also embraces nonya influences, showcased during special menus such as their Chinese New Year offerings where dishes like Pais Ikan (red snapper in black nut paste) and Tiger Prawn Lemak Manis reveal the kitchen’s versatility and careful curation. This adaptability positions Java Tree as an ideal venue for diners who appreciate classic European dining but welcome a touch of local flavor.

The restaurant’s wine list further elevates the experience, presenting a diverse range from renowned regions worldwide, including thoughtful pairings suggested by attentive staff. From crisp Grüner Veltliner to robust reds served by the glass, the beverage program complements the cuisine without overwhelming it.

Service at Java Tree is meticulous and personalized. The staff, led by knowledgeable management, ensures that meals progress in unison for all diners, subtly enhancing comfort with small gestures like elegant napkin folding. This attention to detail reflects a deeper commitment to hospitality that makes guests feel valued and well cared for.

Targeted at discerning travelers and locals who seek an upscale, yet welcoming setting within a historic hotel, Java Tree excels in delivering both fine dining and genuine ease. While not the most budget-friendly option, the quality of the food, the thoughtful service, and the atmospheric surroundings justify the experience. Whether visiting for a special occasion or a refined evening out, Java Tree stands as a memorable destination for European gastronomy in the heart of George Town.

We are staying at the E&O and decided to try their Sunday evening roast dinner. It was truly delicious. I had the most tender roast beef and my husband had roast lamb, both very generous portions, with two Yorkshire puddings per plate and plenty of vegetables. The service was impeccable and the ambience of the restaurant very pleasant. It was also extremely good value for money.

The Java Tree restaurant is right beside the Palm Court at the main lobby of Eastern and oriental hotel. It’s quite new and entrance is through the Palm Court. They open for dinner and serve mainly European and Nonya dishes. Classic like the beef Wellington and Nonya Peranakan dishes. We tried both the menu and they are simply delicious. They have great wine list and restaurant manager Gianluca De Biasi and his service crew take great care of us. We recommend this place and reservation is recommended.

OMG! Java Tree is so good! I don't understand why the low review ratings! I must give them a total redemption! Ambience: Very nice and quite ambience, akin to bringing me back to colonial hey days of Penang =) Service: Service is impeccable! Very attentive and very well trained staff. Food is always served together for the whole table, and that little touch of folding the napkin when guest leaves the table briefing is also done perfectly! Food: Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Special mention goes to their Escargot - which is the BEST escargot dish I had ever tasted all around the world! Their creation of baking the escargot on mushroom (instead of in a recycled shell) is absolutely ingenious! The mushroom absorbed the flavours of the escargot as well as the olive oil, making this dish a beautiful symphony of flavour on the palate! Bravo! You should also try their Foie Gras terrine, which is whole foie gras pressed into a terrine, which I had never seen before anywhere else! The beef tournedos (which is a fillet mignon) is also served to perfection! This is one restaurant that I will definitely visit again in my future visit to Penang! =)

We had our CNY dinner at Java Tree at E&O Heritage Hotel. The restaurant serves Nyonya food and they had a great menu curated for the CNY dinner. The highlight of the dinner was Pais Ikan (red snapper in the black nut paste). I know in the picture it looks like burned fish, but it’s not and is actually super yummy! Another great advantage was the waiter (whose name I haven’t memorised, unfortunately). He was extremely helpful and friendly. He suggested the best wine to pair our food with. We followed his advice and chose Austrian Singing Grüner Veltliner wine. It was really crisp and fresh. I’ve never tried Austrian wine before and it was a great occasion to try it. Overall, the food was really good. Apart from Pais Ikan, the Tiger Prawn Lemak Manis was very delicious too. The desserts were great too! Loved the travelling dessert cart that had every option you’d imagine! The wine list is very extensive and covers many countries - so if you’re into wine, you should try this place. The price-wise, it’s not the cheapest, but the experience and quality of food makes it worth every ringgit spent.

We thought this was a combination of local and western food but it is 100% western( French). While the food was good and the service polite, I am not sure it was worth the expense. Good place to go if you don’t want to leave the hotel and you are looking for European style meal. There were also some good options on the wine menu.

It was Christmas Day and we decided to come here for an afternoon tea. Really love the food and ambience and this place has never failed us. E&O hotel was our wedding hotel many years ago, and still one of our favourite place for celebration. Rm 280 for two pax afternoon tea, with good varieties of savoury and sweets.
